This traditional Scottish song-chant was popular for over a century. Some find it to be too abusive in nature to use with children, while others find the lyrics to be authentic, and as such, appropriate to learn in the context of folk music. In some versions, there are more verses in which we find the wife has “learned her lesson” and is contrite to do her duties.
